Access Field Calibration/Validation Data Tutorial

This is a short introduction to accessing the AusCover field calibration/validation data sets via the AusCover visualisation portal.

Note: AusCover field data sets are dynamic, directly linked from the AusCover spatial database and updating automatically as new data becomes available. If you are interested in a data set, check the portal occasionally for updates.

1. Go to the AusCover Visualisation Portal

Access to the AusCover hosted field calibration and validation data sets is most easily accomplished through the AusCover visualisation portal.

2.  Locate the Calibration/Validation Data Sets

Once on the portal's home page the field calibration/validation data can be found in the file directory located in the top left corner. Look for it under Map Layers => Themes => Calibration/Validation Field Data. Datasets are divided into field and airborne sets.

3.  Select the Data Set of Interest

Select either the field or airborne folder. The various data sets will then be displayed. Select one you are interested in by clicking on the layer's name in the menu. The layer will be added to the Active Layers List in the bottom left of the screen and display on the map. You can explore the data by navigating around the map using the navigation and zoom tools.

4.  Explore the Data

In this example we have zoomed into the Tumbarumba Supersite and have loaded the Cal/Val Site Footprints, Tree Structure, Hyperspectral Calibration and Flux Towers Layers. To access the data we select the hand tool and click on a feature of interest. A pop up window with tabs for each data set selected will appear.

In the popup window, select the tab corresponding to the data set of interest. The popup window contains links to all associated data and metadata, as well as preview or sample of the data.Typically there will be a link to a site data folder on the THREDDS server, which will contain all images and instrument files for that site. While it is possible to download the instrument files and imagery through the THREDDS server, for access to larger data sets or numerous files, FTP download is recommended. Additionally there will a link to a shapefile/kmz file to the ancillary data for the data set at all sites within Australia. Finally there will be some links to various 'metadata' records.
