Future development

The MODIS Disturbance Index is under development and validation with plans for release by end of 2012



Larger-scale forest disturbances from wildfires, hurricanes, pest outbreaks, and widespread tree mortality have major impacts on the global carbon cycle and can result in sudden and large pulses of CO2 and other trace gases released into the atmosphere. The MODIS-based Global Disturbance Index (MGDI) was designed to provide information on the timing, location, and extent of such large scale forest disturbances (Mildrexler et al. 2009). The MGDI combines land surface temperature (LST) and EVI data from the Aqua-MODIS sensor for disturbance mapping.  Major disturbance events will cause changes in EVI and LST that exceed the normal range of natural variability over unique, event-specific periods of time.
