Alternate title

Fire Frequency 1km derived from AVHRR/NOAA Burnt Area Maps

Abstract or Summary

Fire Frequency is derived from the whole time series of burnt area maps derived from AVHRR and provides the average number of fires affecting an area in a given time period. It is the inverse of the fire return interval.

  2. Climate and Forecast (CF) convention standard names (http://cfconventions.org/standard-names.html).

Data quality

AVHRR Fire Frequency is derived from manual mapping of fire affected areas using data from AVHRR. It provides the number of times an area has been affected by fire in a given time period. Due to the degree of manual interaction required, the mapping is done on a fortnightly basis only. The resolution of AVHRR of 1.1 km at nadir and the manual interpretation restricts its application to fires larger than about 4 km^2.
