Abstract or Summary

Grassland curing is the dead fraction of grassland expressed as a percentage, strictly by dried weight. The MODIS Grassland Curing data estimates curing values from satellite data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on board the Terra satellite operated by NASA.

The curing values are derived from surface reflectance estimates in up to seven spectral bands that are derived from cloud-free MODIS observations in an 8-day window on a 500-m grid. Data is provided for five alternative algorithms: four developed by the Bushfire CRC Project A1.4 on grassland curing (methods A, B, C, D), and one developed by the Victorian Country Fire Authority (MapVictoria). Each algorithm is a function of MODIS surface reflectances in a subset of the seven bands, and has been trained and assessed using field observations. The Bushfire CRC algorithms have been trained on approximately 25 sites with a limited distribution across Australia, while MapVictoria has been trained on around 200 sites restricted to Victoria.

The curing data are available from the beginning of the Terra/MODIS record in 2000. Regions of missing data may occur due to prolonged cloud during the 8-day observation window.

Data quality

RMS errors of the MODIS curing values compared to field observations vary slightly between algorithms but are around 11-14%.

Data may contain spatial gaps, usually due to protracted cloud during the 8-day observation window.

The Bushfire CRC algorithms have been trained on approximately 25 sites with a limited distribution across Australia. MapVictoria has been trained on around 200 sites restricted to Victoria.
